The Vikings’ Afghan Saga

A bit delayed, but the Legati’s final AAR from Williamsburg Muster, Saturday morning’s (bloody) Force on Force fight.

The scenario, a club favorite, involves a patrol of from B [Suffolk] Company,  2nd Royal Anglian Regiment  (“The Vikings”), travelling in Viking APCs getting caught in a nasty ambush in the city of Sangin, Helmand Province. In the two pre-convention playtests, we had two completely different results (major victories for both sides), so all in the club were quite anxious to see the results. Personally, after having no one show up for my previous two games run at the local cons, I was just hoping I could actually run a game….

Thankfully we did have a few show up and after a brief explanation of the basic rules, we got started. The scenario began with  the British taking a  first aid check for the 10 soldiers inside a Viking it by an AT RPG. From the first die rolls things were not going well for the Brits, and they found themselves with 2 KIA, 3 Seriously wounded and a handful of lightly wounded before the game even began.

The British patrol is ambushed

The British patrol is ambushed

The Taliban forces were think as thieves, but their first few ambushes met with mixed results. Fate continued to be against the British, though, as the began failing a series of  Troop Quality checks, especially when attempting to spot enemy troops). Most of these were on the roll of “1”s resulting in a series of rather unfortunate fog of war cards for the Coalition forces. In just a few rolls, the British found themselves dodging an old Soviet mine, a suspected IED and a meandering goatherder, shooting up an IED trigger man for another bomb and losing initiative indefinitely as a high-ranking officer back at headquarters became far too involved in the little engagement (the infamous “10,000-mile Screwdriver” card). Meanwhile, the only real, card-induced hindrance faced by the insurgents the entire game was the arrival of an Al-Jazeera news crew, who got themselves to the safety of a compound rather quickly.

The little luck the British troops had in the numerous firefights began to run out rather quickly. On the western side of the table, heavy fire (especially from the vehicle-mounted .30 cals) chased away an insurgent group and two DShK teams….though, as our club has learned in countless games, the latter perpetually “suck”. While these insurgents bolted and refused to rejoin the fray, they certainly did their part and inflicted a number of casualties on the dismounted troops. So many were hit that there were soon no unwounded men on that side of the field to even conduct first aid checks on the casualties.

Caught in the crossfire, the British patrol takes serious casualties

Across the street, the heavy machine gun fire from the British Land Rovers took their toll, but the stalwart Taliban fighters did not budge and began returning deadly fire. In rapid succession, the insurgents incapacitated all of the .30 cal gunners in the Vikings and killed or seriously wounded the crews of both Land Rovers. One particularly determined group of Taliban fighters was reduced, at one point, to just three, leaderless fighters but held fast. Throughout the game, use of hidden movement in ratlines and tunnels and arrival of reinforcements at all the right places helped keep victory within the insurgent players’ grasp.

When our time slot came to a close, an assessment was made of the situation. Only four of the game’s eight turns had been completed, but over half of the British force was already killed or seriously wounded. Even if everything went in favor of the Coalition players, it was determined that the game could only end in Taliban victory, so we called the game.

Though it was a bloody contest, an enjoyable time was had by all and a few more gamers were introduced to Ambush Alley’s fantastic modern warfare rules.

Until next time, may your dice always roll well and happy gaming!

All our competitors embodied the best in sportsmanship during play and I want to thank them all for making the running of the tournament a joy with their positive attitudes.  While we saw a lot of the usual suspects (i.e. armies) at this tournament it was nice to see the new Byzantine faction represented among the regular favorites such as the Welsh, Vikings, Skraeling and Normans.  Below are some pictures taken during play:

1982 Bekaa Valley Israeli v Syrians

The First Lebanon War started on June 6, 1982 and last until May 17, 1983 with the Israeli objective of expelling the PLO from Lebanon and installing a pro-Israel Christian government in Lebanon, under the leadership of Bachir Gemayel.  Code named Operation Peace, Israeli leaders hoped that such action would secure a more peaceful future for Israel, but with the assassination of Gemayel the Israeli hopes were dashed and while successful on the military side of the invasion the political aims were never to be realized.

Early on in the invasion the IDF had pushed well up the Bekaa Valley and was quite close to cutting the Damascus/Beirut Highway.  In response to that threat the Syrians had come up with a plan to mass a counterattack behind the eastern ridge line of the Bekaa and strike fast and hard against the IDF’s right flank which had become exposed as a result of its rapid advance.  Historically, however, the Israelis found out about the plan, and adjusted their defenses prior to an attack being launched.  This scenario looks at what might have been had Israeli intelligence not discovered the Syrian plans.  The rules Modern Spearhead are being used for this game and the 3mm figures from Oddzial Osmy are featured along with the first products from The Phalanx Consortium designed to specifically in support of this scale.  Both of these product lines are distributed by PicoArmor www.picoarmor.com.

The field of battle!

The field of battle! (looking northwest)

The scenario starts with the Israeli 85th driving home its attack against the PLO Al Saladin Brigade just outside the town of Houch Al Harime on the northwest corner of the battle space.  This force is under attack orders to isolate and destroy what remains of this brigade.

The "85th" attacking!

The “85th” attacking!

The Al Saladin Brigade confronts the Israeli TF with three platoons of T-34/85’s and three platoons of foot infantry defending in the town.  While well outgunned the men of the Al Saladin prepare for the Zionist onslaught with a desire to make them pay for every inch of ground.  The Israelis moved into spotting range of the T-34’s on the outskirts of town and opened up with one Merkava I platoon destroying one T-34 platoon, but the other platoon of Merkavas being suppressed by a surprise Hind D attack that the Israeli Redeye team could not drive off.  During these opening moves the Israelis are unaware that elements of the 20th and 90th Syrian Armored Brigades have begun pouring through the two passes that cut through the ridge line to the east.  (Note:  While the figures for the Syrians are on the board at this time the bird’s eye view of things is limited by the rules that only units in spotting distance can trigger and orders change.  Therefore, The Israeli players must continue with their initial order even though danger is approaching from the east.)

Syrian lead elements cross trough passes!

Syrian lead elements cross trough passes!

The Syrian 20th has been ordered to move to the relief of the Al Saladin Brigade while the 90th is ordered to secure the Syrian left  and begin moving south up the valley in search of other Israeli forces to engage.  The Israeli 71st was in reserve near the town of Tal Al Za’za’a on the southern end of the table.  They were awaiting orders once the first signs of a Syrian counterattack became known.  They would soon receive that word as the 20th came into spotting range of the 85th and engaged them just as they were pressing home their attack into Harime.  The 20th was able to catch the Israelis flatfooted and began inflicting punishment during their first salvos.

Israelis press hard into village!

Israelis press hard into village!

At this point in the struggle the Syrians have turned the hunters into the hunted and the 85th is beginning to come apart under the weight of the Syrian 20th’s T-72 Batt.

Syrian 20th slam into the 85th tearing into their right flank!

Syrian 20th slam into the 85th tearing into their right flank!

Once the initial contact was made the Israeli 71st got the order to move up into a position to flank the 20th. While the Israeli 53rd Armored TF was ordered up from its position of reserve off the southern table edge.  Would these two forces be enough to stem the tide of Syrian armor?  While the 71st advanced into position it ran into lead elements of the Syrian 90th Brigade moving south on the eastern edge of the battle space.  This lead to a major engagement of forces outside the village of Dakoue which hugged the base of the ridge on the valley’s  eastern edge.

The 71st moves into contact with lead elements of the Syrian 90th outside Dakoue.

The 71st moves into contact with lead elements of the Syrian 90th outside Dakoue.

While the battle lines were being drawn around Dakoue the final elements of the 85th were being destroyed piece meal outside Harime.  The weight and speed of the Syrian advance had been too much for them to withstand.

Syrian T-72 Batt surveys the carnage outside Harime.

Syrian T-72 Batt surveys the carnage it wrought to the once proud 85th outside Harime.

With victory seemly within their grasp the Syrian High Command tried to get a handle on their victorious forces so that they could turn south and reinforce the move of the 90th south.  Where the Syrian plan had worked so well up till this point things now began to unravel has they attempted to redirect the 20th to the aid of the now engaged and outgunned T-55’s of the 90th.  The Israeli 71st’s Merkava I platoons now began to return the favor and revenge the death of the 85th by tearing into the T-55 Batts of the 90th with their superior range and armor.  The question now was could the 20th regroup from its triumph in time to even up the fight with its T-72’s.  At this point only time could tell.

Outgun and coming at the Israelis piece meal the T-55's are no match for the newer Merkava I's.

Outgunned and coming at the Israelis piece meal the T-55’s are no match for the newer Merkava I’s.

With the Syrian attack now floundering for the 90th, and with  the 20th still caught up outside Harime, the 90th now would face the combined elements of the 71st and 53rd. These two fresh Israeli Battalions had formed a defensive line anchored on the west by the village of Khiara and to the east by the ridge towering over the valley floor.  A valley of death for both sides with the advantage now turning back in favor of the Israelis. The pleas for reinforcements on the part of the 90th Brigade were going unanswered.  At this point when all hope seemed to be lost the 20th finally began its advance to the aid of the 90th.  Would they get there in time, or would this mass of armor and men, that had started the day with such success, be pushed back when victory was there for the taking?

Syrian T-72's of the 20th try to even up the fight and begin pushing against 53rd on the Israeli left.

Syrian T-72’s of the 20th try to even up the fight and begin pushing against 53rd on the Israeli left.

With the T-72’s now back in the fight they pushed the 53rd outside Khiara and began inflicting some punishment.  Syrian Hind D’s and Mig-21’s came over the battle space and were called into attack the 53rd assisting in inflicting additional damage on the 53rd. This lead the 53rd to give  ground so that they could narrow their defensive frontage and bring more fire to bear against this resurgent advance of the 20th.  The Israeli 71st by this time though had complete advantage over the 90th and with that threat neutralized they were able to now come firmly to the aid of the 53rd.

The fragments of the 90th withdraw leaving a valley filled with burning wrecks.

The fragments of the 90th withdraw, leaving a valley filled with burning wrecks.

With this combined weight now brought to bear the 20th was forced to give up any hopes of breaking through, and began the process of withdrawing back down the valley.  The Israelis decided that caution is the better part of valor and held their lines without pursuit.  They knew that outside of the delayed follow thru by the 20th they had been pressed hard and it was best to just stay put and consolidate their position before night fall.

With too few Merkava I's burning in the distance the Syrians decide to withdraw.

With too few Merkava I’s burning in the distance the Syrians decide to withdraw.

I would like to thank all of those who participated in this event.  In game turns this actions took place over nearly 8 hours of scaled time, and was played to a conclusion in 4.5 hours of real time.  I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves.  I want to thank the Johns from PicoArmor for their support of this event and I look forward to working with them in the design and production of more accessories for 3mm gaming.  The sense of both vertical and horizontal scale on the table is unmatched for those wanting to game large battles where we finally get to game as “Generals”.

Happy gaming,

Williamsburg Muster 2013 a Report

We have just concluded the Williamsburg Muster weekend for 2013 and I wanted to take time to give a quick report regarding all that our group did over the weekend.  First off thanks go out to Justin and the crew for doing another great job coordinating the convention, and I think everyone had a good time.  This year we ran five events as a group.  Unfortunately due to work conflicts for Peter he was not able to finish up his event so he had to delay his Russian Civil War game for another convention in the future.  Our main event this year was our second installment of running a SAGA Dark Ages Tournament.  With the sponsorship of Architects of War, thank you Barb and Ernie, and their gracious prize support we had a tournament of eight players which was run on Friday evening (More detail in a later post).  Andrew ran two events, this go around, with a Fallen Timbers Muskets & Tomahawks demo and a Force on Force Afghan scenario which he will be writing up an AAR for later this week.  Ron ran a Spanish Civil War scenario set on Suicide Hill outside Madrid.  He has already posted his AAR on the Blog so I would recommend reading his report.  I ran a Bekaa Valley 1982 scenario fight between Israeli and Syrian forces.  I will be posting pictures and an AAR for your enjoyment.  There was a bit of a buzz regarding this event since it was the first time many had seen the 3mm figures distributed by PicoArmor www.picoarmor.com and produced by Oddzial Osmy out of Poland.  Also I was proud to debut a line of accessories I will be sculpting and producing in support of this range.  The first releases should be on the PicoArmor site in the near future.

Though I don’t have a final number on attendance this year, I did get the impression that it was up a little bit which is a good thing.  I know the goal is to raise attendance to the 400 level, but as that goal is approached there will have to be a consideration of venue change to facilitate that kind of turn out. The Dealer area had some new faces which is also a plus.  It was good to see them and the regular favorites.  While the dust is just settling on this convention we will be gearing up to decide on events for Guns of August.  The one confirmation I can make at this time is that our SAGA Tournament will be held on Saturday evening of the convention weekend.  In addition to sponsorship from Architects of War www.architectsofwar.com we are looking forward to adding the sponsorship of Zuzzy Miniatures www.zuzzyminiatures.com in August as well.

Thanks to everyone who participated in one or several of our events and we look forward to seeing you again next time.

Happy gaming,

Chris Bennett

The Battle for Suicide Hill

This weekend was of course the return of Williamsburg Muster here in Williamsburg, Virginia.  As has become our custom, Williamsburg Legati took the opportunity to run a number of games which I hope were all well received and most of which were pretty well attended.    I will leave it to other (Chris) to make a full convention report but will take this opportunity to write an after action report for my Spanish Civil War game THE BATTLE OF SUICIDE HILL.

Suicide hill is the name given by the British Brigade of the  International Brigade  to a fight on the first day of the their  three day fight in the Jarama  Valley.  (February 12, 1938).  Four companies of the British Brigade were tasked with defending what was at the time being called Casa Blanca Hill and Conical Hill from and attack by Nationalists forces of the Army of Africa.  These are Moroccan Regulares and Spanish Foreign Legion.

Moroccans advancing

The game was based upon the introductory scenario in Egglestone’s A World Aflame Rule book published by Osprey.

The fight began with Nationalist artillery firing upon the two hill tops, and some ground support provided by the Condor Legion.

Henschel 123 strafing 15th IB

Henschel 123 strafing 15th IB

Unlike is usually the case however, the Nationalists did not enjoy air superiority at Jarama, and soon a Republican I-16 was on hand to chase off the other plane and to repay the Nationalists with their own medicine.

Republican Air Support

Then came the advance of the Nationalist Brigade, with a platoon of Spanish Foreign Legion and a platoon of Moroccan Regulares.  Lively fire from the LMG in Casa Blanca (the farmhouse from which the hill gets its name) proved disastrous to  La Legion’s 2nd Company, causing it to seek cover and eventually to depart in hopes of finding a safer location.

Unfortunately this early success would not be enough to stop the onslaught as the Nationalist’s experienced soldiers continued up the slopes of the two hills , towards the positions of their outnumbered foes.  Withering fire from the Nationalists soon proved too much for the Republic’s British friends.  the company of the conical hill took a large number of casualties including their company commander and were soon driven from the field.

With the cover provided by the farmhouse, the British Brigade’s 1st Company faired better, but it still could n0t stand against the forces quickly climbing up the hillsides towards their beleaguered positions.  The Platoon headquarters came forward in the hope of strengthening Casa Blanca’s defense.

004

The 2nd company of the British Brigade armed with 3 maxims, had been suffering from ammunition difficulties all day, having been supplied with the wrong ammunition for their old Russian supplied guns.  Matters were finally corrected but only after the loss of a great deal of important time.  Finally the 2nd company made their way forward, to their defensive position at the edge of the plateau,, just across the small valley from the two hotly contested hills.

2nd Company did its best to save the day and served to slow the Nationalist advance, but in the end it was in vain.  Neither their firepower or even the addition of a t-26 which had finally arrived on the scene would prove enough to save the 1st company from the withering firing it was now receiving from both the Legionnaires and the Moroccans together.  They died bravely within Casa Blanca, and both hills were now in Nationalist control, just as the sun set on this scene of blood and violence.

I would like to thank those Ron, ,Justin and Pete who participated in the game on Saturday, as well as my fellow Legati who helped to fiddle this game into existence.

I also wish to give my heartfelt thanks to Age of Glory.  This business was just short of being an official sponsor for the game and was the source for a great deal of the elements within the game.  Always a great Pleasure to do business with!
